Frequently asked questions

Am I ready for this program?

If you can ski a green run on your own, turning both ways and stopping where you want, yes. It's fine if your turns are wedge turns; that's what we fix. If you're not sure, send us a short video of you skiing and we'll tell you.

How do I know my boots fit?

Snug, not painful. Your toes touch the front when you stand straight and pull back a little when you bend your knees; your heel stays down when you lean forward. Boots that are too big are the most common reason riders can't feel their edges, so if yours feel roomy, say so and we swap them.

Who sets up my bindings?

The rental shop sets the release setting from your height, weight, boot size and skiing level, so the ski comes off when it should. Don't adjust it yourself. If you bring your own skis, have a shop check the setting before camp.

Do I need poles?

Yes, in this program. The pole plant is part of parallel skiing and we teach it on day three. Poles are included in your rental.

What if I fall?

Falls at this level are usually slow and sideways. We refresh falling and getting up on day one, and the sideslip you learn on day two means you can always get down a slope that feels too steep.

I'm fine on the chairlift. Anything new?

Not much. On some blue runs the lift is longer or faster. Your coach will say what to expect at the top of each new lift.

Is skiing hard on the knees?

Parallel skiing puts more of your weight on one leg at a time, so we teach a stance that keeps the knees soft and in line with your feet, and we build up to steeper slopes gradually. Warm up each morning, stop before you're exhausted, and tell your coach straight away if a knee feels wrong. If you have a knee that already gives you trouble, check with your doctor before you book and let us know.

How many riders per coach?

Four riders to one coach, at most.

What's the minimum age?

12. Riders aged 12 to 17 can come without a parent, with your signed permission.

What language is the lesson in?

Each camp page says whether coaching is in English, in Mandarin, or both. On bilingual camps we split groups by language where we can. Tell us your preferred language when you book.

Do I need insurance?

Yes. Snowsports travel insurance is required and bought separately. It needs to cover skiing, medical costs and getting you home if you're hurt. We ask for proof before you travel.

What is the Progression Promise?

Our promise that you will link parallel turns on a blue run by your last day. If you come to every session, do the exercises and don't get there, your lesson cost comes back as credit toward your next ESC camp.
