Holding Onto Faith

Hi, I’m Poppy.  It’s great to be writing to you today.  I’m 18 and currently a first-year student at Exeter university, studying Sport and Exercise Science.

I’m going to be honest, with you when I first sat down to write this blog, I wasn’t sure where to begin. But over the past few weeks I’ve had an urge to write about two things, holding onto faith and establishing great friendships.

I am loving uni life!  I’ve made some amazing, lifelong friends. I’m sure many of you have started something new this year whether that be moving away from home, starting a new job or maybe even choosing to do a year abroad, but I guess a lot of you can relate to me when I say starting somewhere/something completely new, is challenging!  It’s not always all it is worked up to be. There are days when you feel alone, days where you feel as though God isn’t there or just doesn’t care, or maybe days when you were questioning why God had placed you in this new environment.

Well, all I can say is keep holding onto faith. Even when things aren’t going exactly how you planned or even when you feel as if God has no plan for you at all, keep holding on. Isaiah 60:22 says, “At the right time, I, the lord will make it happen.” God is working for the good in all situations. His plan will come to pass but not on our schedule or anybody else’s but on His own. So, in those moments when we feel helpless, lonely and completely in the dark, just hold onto that faith for God is bigger than any of our circumstances, He is completely in control.

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

2 Corinthians 5:7

“For we walk by faith, not by sight”

Isaiah 26:4

“Trust in the lord forever, for the lord is a rock for all ages.”

The idea of holding onto this faith during times when life is challenging, is hard. Although these situations are not always easy, God puts us there to challenge us and develop our faith, pushing us towards opportunities to spread His word.

Still having said this, I know there are times in everyday life when these challenges God has put in front of us seem one step to far and you begin to lose grip of holding onto that faith.  1 Thessalonians 5:11 says “Therfore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”  We were not made to fight these challenges alone.  These friendships have been given to us by God so that we can encourage, guide, and learn from one another. So, trust that God has complete control in every situation and through these strong friendships support and encourage one another to continue to hold onto that faith.

Proverbs 27:17

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Psalm 133:1

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”
