A big part of having a faith and following God is not knowing where He is taking you. There’s so many points in my life where something has happened or I have felt a specific way for no apparent reason and its left me feeling frustrated and asking God “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”. It’s so easy to try and put logic behind it, but often that puts you in an even stickier situation than before.
In the book of Genesis, we see Joseph endure so much pain and betrayal; his brothers abandon him in a pit and then he is sold as a slave to the Ishmaelites (Genesis 37:18-28). Fast forward to Genesis 39, where Joseph has been promoted from a slave to Potiphar’s personal servant, an honourable duty. It seems like Jospeh’s life is all slotting into the place, however, Joseph then hits turmoil AGAIN when Potiphar’s wife tries to seduce him! When Joseph declines numerous times, Potiphar’s wife frames him, claiming that he was the one who tried seducing her. Joseph is then sent to prison.
During all this, most of us would have been struggling with our faith, confused with why God was letting us be betrayed time and time again, however in both Genesis 39:2 and 39:21 it says ‘But the Lord was with Joseph’. Whenever you feel disheartened in your faith and question what God is putting you through, remember He is always with you and is going through it with you. One way I try to overcome this feeling is simply by talking to God, I just say “I am really struggling through this and don’t understand, but I trust you and the purpose you have for me”
Another encouraging thing about Joseph’s story is that, after being in prison for 2 years….2 YEARS, Joseph is given the opportunity to interpret the King’s dreams, which leads to him being made governor of Egypt (Genesis 41). Though Joseph went through so much struggle, he ended up as the second most powerful man in Egypt living in the palace, all because he served each season he went through no matter the struggle and trusted God through it all.
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not seeHewbrews 11:1 [niv]
You may be going through a season of uncertainty and distance from your faith, feeling like God has a blindfold over your eyes and you don’t know where He is taking you… if that is you, I encourage you to remember you are in that situation for a reason and one day you will be in a much better place and position just like Joseph was when he ended up in the palace! One day, you will understand why God put you through that turmoil.
When you are feeling lost and don’t know where your future is headed, call out to God and He will guide you in the right direction, be it with His voice or presence, He will guide you. You aren’t blindfolded, you’re being blinded by the light at the end of the tunnel, the incredible person that God is shaping you to one day be.
God has a purpose for your life, everything you go through is to shape you into the disciple that God wants you to be. Remember that.
